The Oussudu Bird Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu, India

Located at twelve km from Pondicherry, the Oussudu lake covers an area of 700 ha. It was a reservoir lake created for irrigation purposes few centuries ago. Today the lake is a sanctuary for migratory water birds and a major tourist attraction of the Pondicherry region. During the visit we will observe the incredible diversity and beauty of the Indian avifauna, whether resident, wintering or passing, such as bee-eaters and rollers, endemic pelicans, painted storks, Asian open-bills, ducks and waders, barbets and passerines etc. We will also interpret the landscape of this wetland and its immediate environment. We will talk about the evolution of the historical political ecology of this unique place. Finally, a meeting with some local users will allow us to discuss the issues of a wetland conservation in a context of peri-urbanization, land use and water sharing conflicts in the context of climate change.
